The Incumbent will be responsible for-
Job Purpose-
Lead the engineering design of large utility-scale BESS projects (standalone or hybrid Solar + Storage). This role focuses on system sizing, PCS and EMS selection, grid compliance, and project integration to deliver bankable, reliable storage projects aligned with customer requirements and local regulations.
Role Accountabilities-
System Design & Engineering Leadership-
1. Lead the system-level engineering design of BESS projects ranging from 5 MW to 500+ MW, including standalone and Solar + BESS hybrid configurations.
2. Conduct comprehensive BESS sizing and dispatch optimization studies based on project-specific applications such as frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, peak shaving, or hybrid renewable dispatch.
3.Develop and own technical specifications for Power Conversion Systems (PCS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and SCADA platforms, ensuring seamless system integration.
Technical Documentation & Compliance-
1. Prepare detailed engineering documentation, including: Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), Protection & grounding schemes, MV/HV substation layout and interconnection up to 220 kV.
2. Ensure adherence to applicable national and international standards including CEA/BIS grid codes, IEC, IEEE, and UL.
3.Define project-specific control logics, communication interfaces (e.g., Modbus, IEC 61850, DNP3), and system behavior for normal and abnormal grid conditions.
Cross-functional Collaboration & Technical Support-
1. Provide expert-level technical support during- tendering and RFP response preparation, proposal engineering for customers & Grid interconnection studies and due diligence with utilities and consultants.
2.Collaborate closely with the product development team to define technical requirements for PCS, EMS, and battery integration in alignment with evolving market demands.
Project Execution Support-
1. Offer ongoing technical oversight during project execution including: Design validation and optimization, FAT/SAT planning and witnessing, System commissioning and performance testing
2.Serve as the technical authority in interactions with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), utilities, regulatory bodies, and third-party engineering consultants.
Team Leadership & Mentoring-
1. Build and mentor a high-performing team of system engineers working on BESS sizing, grid compliance, and system control.
2. Promote continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and the adoption of best practices within the engineering team.
Skills & Capabilities Required-
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Battery storage sizing methodologies and dispatch simulation
- Power Conversion System (PCS) and Energy Management System (EMS) design and integration
- MV/HV grid interconnection design and protection coordination (up to 220 kV)
- SCADA architectures and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850, DNP3)
- Proficiency with advanced simulation and modeling tools such as:
- ETAP, DigSILENT PowerFactory
- PSCAD
- MATLAB/Simulink
- Strong understanding of energy markets, grid services, and revenue models for energy storage.
- Excellent project management and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Effective communicator with the ability to translate technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
- Passionate about clean energy transition and technology innovation in the power sector.
